Applied research and resources for those with Down syndrome and their caretakers are limited and even more so in the areas of multilingual language learning and use. Here you will find bilingual resources and materials for people with Down syndrome and their families, teachers, and therapists.
Little is known about how to foster bilingual communication for those with Down syndrome. However, we do know that those with DS acquire language in the same developmental trajectory as neurotypical peers. Keep this in mind when chooseing tools to determine language learning and use.
Current understanding and techniques for bilingual delays and disorders can be found in the links below.
Research supporting the ability of children to learn more than one language.
Finding an SLP who specializes in speech and language for those with Down syndrome can be difficult. Speech-Language Pathologists can evaluate and treat those with communication disorders, but only in states where they maintain a license. The American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and Departments of Regulatory Agencies prohibit therapists from treating those in states where they are not licensed. This leaves many people with Down syndrome to rely on therapists in their home state regardless of the availability of specialists.
A proposed change to this policy is underway called the Interstate Compact. Twenty three states have voted to pass this change and ASHA estimates it's enactment in 2023.
We feel strongly that state lines should not prevent patients/clients/students and families from getting the care they need for health, quality of life, and access to independence. So we offer consults and coaching for the families, caretakers, educators, therapists and institutions who care for those with Down syndrome.
Through the use of virtual technologies like Zoom, we are able to share resources and techniques that supplement existing services and offer specialized insights and methods that work for speech, language, and feeding skill development and maintenance.
